Jean-Louis Richter was apprenticed in 1778, at the age of 12, to the brothers Philippe-Samuel-Théodore (1756-1805) and David-Etienne (1758-1832) Roux, enamel painters. His apprenticeship lasted six years and Richter remained in Geneva thereafter supplying exquisitely painted enamels to the Fabrique for the next forty years. His work drew upon many different engraved sources, often combining elements from several different prints into one painting.
