oval, the lid later inset with a circular enamel portrait miniature of Napoleon III, the gold ground with concentric engine-turning and foliate chased and taille d'épargne enamel borders, the first lid opening to reveal an enamel miniature probably depicting the Death of Socrates, the inner lid decorated with enamel in different shades of blue, the opposite side hinged to reveal a full compartment, the sides and base also with concentric engine-turning within blue taille d'épargne husk borders, divided by chased philosopher's heads such as Homer and Plato, each below a chased trophy with identifying banners such as 'L'Iliad' and 'L'Odyssee' above Homer's profile, maker's mark MB&C in vertical lozenge, struck four times, the left rim numbered: 214
