Christie's, London, "Works of Art from the Bute Collection," 10 July 1996, lot 91.

The arms are those of Crichton quartering Dalrymple and another, within the order of the Thistle, for William, 5th Earl of Dumfries, K.T. (1699-1768). He inherited the title from his mother, the 4th Countess. In 1760 he succeeded his brother as 4th Earl of Stair.

The Earl also acquired from Eliza Godfrey a coffee pot and pair of three-light candelabra, lots 90 and 92 in the 1996 sale. The group belongs to a campaign of patronage by the Earl in the 1750s, including commissioning Dumfries House, Ayrshire, begun in 1754 by the Adam brothers, and its furniture, largely by Thomas Chippendale, before the end of the decade.
