The Shun Lee was built on the Thames in 1866 by W. Walker, weighed 674 tons, and was 158 feet in length. Her maiden voyage was between London and Australia under Captain J. Milbank, and she was then employed on the China Trade. In 1871, she was sold to Potter & Company of London and began the London-New Zealand trade.
