With a practice spanning more than four decades, Terry Winters (US, b. 1949) is one of the foremost abstract painters working today in the United States. His paintings engage diverse themes, including the architecture of living systems, mathematical diagrams, musical notation, and new orders of data visualization. Primary among his concerns is the natural world, which he maps through abstract forms, lines, and color.
This painting is an example of his Tessellation series. The title refers to the process of creating a two-dimensional plane through the repetition of a geometric shape, as in the making of tiling and mosaics. The kaleidoscopic composition weaves together overlapping grids and patterns, while the surface is enriched by transparent pigments that allow the viewer to see, as Winters says, “all the events that went into the making of the painting.”
Winters lives and works in New York City and Columbia County, New York. He has had one-person exhibitions at numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; and Kunsthalle Basel.
