Twin Cities–based artist Ruben Nusz (US, b. 1978) creates works that incorporate his interest in studying the history and techniques of painting. He is best known for his meticulously executed and boldly colored abstractions that play with illusion and the malleable nature of reality. Nusz created Ebbing as part of a series of small works in which he abandoned color to explore the technique of grisaille—a method of painting exclusively in shades of gray—used for centuries by artists to create a painting’s structure before adding color. Here, the landscape imagery becomes secondary to Nusz’s deep reflection on the process of painting itself.

Nusz has exhibited at venues including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; New Orleans Museum of Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Rochester Art Center; and Weinstein Hammons Gallery, Minneapolis. His work is held in the collections of the Walker Art Center, Weisman Art Museum, and Minneapolis Institute of Art as well as numerous private collections nationally.
