The Real fábrica de Tapices de Madrid was founded in Spain in 1721 by Jacob Van der Goten, at the instigation of King Philip V of Spain. It was later managed by Livinio tuyck y Van der Goten, a Flemishman who brought with him the expertise of the best manufacturers in his region. The first creations were inspired by French classicism, which had its origins in the Château of Versailles, where Philip V was born, and by the desire to develop high-quality Spanish factories that could rival their European counterparts. At the same time, the Buen Retiro porcelain factory and the La Granja glassworks were created.

Later named Real Fábrica de Tapices y Alfombras, then Manufacture de Santa Barbara, the Stuych family now runs the Madrid institution.
