A suji-bachi [helmet with raised ridges] and mempo [face mask]

Edo period, 18th century


the russet iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a copper-gilt tehen kanamono of typical form, russet iron peak, the black lacquered turnbacks decorated in gold hiramaki-e with hinomaru ogi mon, four-tiered black lacquer neck guard with spaced lacing in dark blue braid, fitted with a gold lacquer maedate in the form of an open fan pierced with a further hinomaru, the russet iron face mask with detachable nose-plate, yak hair moustache, two-tiered solid plate throat protector, laced in matching braid


The bowl to peak: 30 cm., 11¾ in.
