A Kikuchi yari mounted as a wakizashi

Signed Fujiwara Tomimitsu

Edo period, 18^th century

Sugata [configuration]: unokubi-zukuri, iori-mune, mu-zori

Kitae [forging pattern]: itame and masame hada

Hamon [tempering pattern]:narrow suguha hamon in nie

Boshi [tip]: ko-maru boshi with kaeri

Horimono [carvings]: short grooves to each side

Nakago [tang]: kiri, one mekugi-ana, the omote signed Fujiwara Tomimitsu

Habaki [collar]: double clad, copper-gilt

In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard]

Koshirae [mount]: the fine black lacquer aikuchi wakizashi koshirae with ribbed scabbard, the fittings with ishime ground, the silvered menuki carved, chased and and engraved in the form of hawks in flight in high relief, the feather details finely rendered, the shakudo-nanako kozuka [knife handle] and kogai [hair dressing tool] carved in high relief with auspicious birds (zuicho) in gilt, the lacquered tsuka [hilt] with simulated hardwood ground

Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 26.3 cm., 10⅜ in.

Moto-haba [width at the machi]: 2.1 cm., ¾ in.

The wakizashi accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Hozon Token [Sword Especially Worthy of Preservation], no. 120945 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Heisei 1 (1989).

The sword mount accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu [Sword Fitting Especially Worthy of Preservation], no. 4021524 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Reiwa 5 (2023).

This lot should have a warehouse symbol. The item will be sent to Sotheby's Greenford Park Fine Arts Storage Facility immediately after the sale.
