The bowl Momoyama period, late 16th - early 17th century
the sixty-two plate sabiji-nuri [simulated russet iron] lacquered bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a three-stage silver and copper-gilt tehen kanamono, printed Dutch leather peak and turnbacks, the turnbacks applied with copper-gilt maru ni musubi karigane mon [encircled knotted wild-goose crests], engraved copper-gilt fukurin [ornamental border], four-tiered gold lacquer neck guard with close-spaced lacing in orange braid, the copper-gilt maedate [forecrest] in the form of a further knotted wild-goose crest, gold lacquer kuwagata [stylised deer antlers] surmounted on a copper-gilt kuwagata-dai [fixture for kuwagata fittings], chiseled, chased and engraved with a further knotted wild-goose crest before foliate scrolls and pierced with inome [boar's eye] to each end, Dutch leather and linen lining
