The corpus of known works by Michele da Argenta, or Michele de Balestri, is still very restricted. It is based around two Annunciations: one, signed and dated 1522, whose location is no longer known since it was last sold at auction in 1963 (Sotheby’s, London, 27 November 1963, lot 38); the other, dated 1517, now in the Pinacoteca Comunale in the town of Argenta. The present Holy Family was identified by George Martin Richter in 1940, who suggested the master’s name on the back of a photograph.

The soft palette recalls the early Bolognese works of the painter Lorenzo Costa, while the lively interplay of gestures bears some similarity to Francesco Francia. Michele da Argenta remained faithful to the classicism which had already been partly discarded by his peers, approaching it in an extremely graceful way: the almost archaic appearance of the faces and Joseph’s emphatically curly hair are softened by the figures’ peaceful demeanour, complemented by the colouring and architectural surround. The forms, with their well-defined contours, and the background landscape are somewhat reminiscent of the artist’s contemporary Marco Palmezzano, who was active in Forli before working in Rome and Venice.
