Salem Castle, Room 17, Germany (as per the labels on the reverse);

Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 15 December 1997, lot 16 (as Attributed to Pietro Bellotti).

Typical of the imaginary figures from ordinary life which became popular in painting in the first half of the seventeenth century in the wake of Caravaggism, these two eating and drinking figures are painted with an emphasis on naturalism that verges on caricature.

Once attributed to Pietro Bellotti, they are close to Martin Dichtl, a German artist active in Nuremberg and Vienna in the second half of the seventeenth century, who specialized in this type of single working class figure. The German provenance of these two works reinforces the hypothesis of a possible attribution to Dichtl.
