Directly from the Personal Collection of Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin
FLOWN TO THE MOON ON APOLLO 11—BUZZ ALDRIN'S SIGNED COPY OF THE UNITED NATIONS "OUTER SPACE TREATY."
BUZZ ALDRIN'S provenance letter reads, in full: "In July of 1969, I landed on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 crew. To help commemorate this historic milestone, I chose to personally carry this copy of the UN Outer Space Treaty with me to the Moon in my Personal Preference Kit (PPK).
In 1967, two years prior to the the first Moon landing on Apollo 11, the United Nations adopted the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, with the United States, the U.S.S.R., and the United Kingdom as Signatories. This meant that no country could lay a claim of ownership to the Moon, and as such, the planting of the United States Flag was a symbol of triumph for all humankind, rather than a claim of ownership.
I have stamped this treaty in black ink with the phrase 'Flown to the Moon on Apollo XI' and additionally signed it."
