Richardson Ovbiebo

A sculptor and installation artist, Richardson Ovbiebo explores the intricate interplay between individuals and their surroundings. Through his practice, Ovbiebo navigates how human actions and inactions shape and reshape spaces, utilizing objects as conduits for exploring moments of daily life. His works frequently integrates found and industrial materials, including wheels, doors, perspex, wood, and metal, synthesising his work with a captivating blend of familiarity and innovation. 

In 2008, Richardson Ovbiebo undertook his National Youth Service (NYSC) in the northern region of Nigeria, residing amongst the Marghi people. Throughout his ten-month stay, he observed his surroundings and conducted intensive research. He was struck by the prevalence of bicycles – the dominant mode of transport in the local community. These bicycles often fell into disuse, becoming a prominent source of waste. Taking inspiration from these objects, and the conceptual art of Marcel Duchamp and Olu Amoda, Ovbiebo began to appropriate and decontextualise these abandoned objects to shape new forms and meanings. His exploration with such objects is exemplified by this present lot.  

Following his graduation from Yaba College of Technology in 2007, Ovbiebo has actively participated in numerous group exhibitions, exhibiting his work at Omenka Gallery in Lagos, the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, and Terra Kulture. Additionally, he has engaged in a variety of international endeavours, including a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2015 and projects in vibrant artistic hubs like Miami (Nigeria Now), Accra (Red Heritage), and Cameroon (Ravy Art Festival 2012). His work has been recognized through various accolades, including the prestigious First Prize at both the Nigerian Breweries and African Artists’ Foundation National Art Competition in 2009, as well as the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria and African Artist Foundation Exhibition in the same year.
