Lot Details

Description

The spiral-bound album containing approx. 51 original 8x10-inch photographs, produced circa 1976, the original hand-printed photographs from the camera negatives taken on set. It is understood that hundreds of photographs were taken during productions with minor variations, such as characters looking left, right, etc. From these images the studio made their selection to produce a negative for use to promote the film in newspaper and magazine publications. Certain publications including Time sought exclusive images that competitors wouldn't have, hence why the studio had such a variety of photographs to choose from.

Dimensions

10 3/4in x 8in (27.3cm x 20.4cm) overall

This particular style of album is believed to be one of only a handful produced to send to the three contracted toy manufacturers, as design guidelines for the toys produced in conjunction with the film's release. George Lucas's 'Star Wars' was the first film to introduce merchandise in a global way to increase the film's popularity and revenue, which helped to launch the franchise. The photographs in this particular album are a superior quality to the ones used to promote the film, as these were likely shot using a large format camera.
