Gifted by the photographer in 1979 to the present owner

Lewis Baltz (Madrid: Fundación MAPFRE, 2017), pp. 97 and 109

In 1977, Lewis Baltz curated the early exhibition Contemporary American Photographic Works at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which included work by Robert Adams, John Baldessari, Robert Cumming, William Eggleston, and Lee Friedlander, among others—all of whom the Museum has collected in depth. This photograph was donated by the artist to the MFAH in 1979, contemporaneous with both its printing and the department’s founding. The Museum holds several complete series by the photographer, including San Quentin, The New Industrial Parks, and Nevada, of which this is a key image.
