Paul Fusco, Norman Mailer, and Evan Thomas, RFK Funeral Train (New York, 2001) p. 39
In the wake of his assassination, the body of Robert F. Kennedy was transported by rail from New York to Washington, D.C., in preparation for his funeral. Photographing from inside the train, Paul Fusco trained his camera on the thousands of mourners lining the tracks, memorializing the diverse cross-section of America impacted by the tragedy–families, workers, and children, all standing in silent tribute as the funeral train made its slow journey. The series poignantly captures the nation’s grief, offering a powerful visual testament to the widespread impact of RFK’s life and death, and reflects the social and political atmosphere of the time.
