where acquired
A painting by Palma of this subject was in the Sala della Magistratura dei Signori di Notte in the prisons of the Palazzo Ducale, Venice, but is now lost. A drawing, dated 1615, which may be connected to the painting was in the Rudolf collection.1 When the present work last appeared on the market (see Provenance) Dr. Mason Rinaldi dated it to the 1620s.
