This is a preparatory study with differences for Conca's altarpiece, commissioned circa 1743 by the Neapolitan cardinal Tommaso Ruffo, for his chapel, designed by Nicola Salvi, in the Church of San Lorenzo in Damaso, Naples. A second drawing by Conca, with many compositional similarities to the present lot, was sold at Sotheby's London in 1999.1 Both drawings bear the same old attribution to Carracci and share a similar format and high degree of finish and are perhaps the models from which the final altarpiece was chosen.
