Description

Jean-Baptiste Pillement

1727 - 1808

Landscape with two shepherds conversing

Black, white and touches of colored chalks on prepared canvas

377 by 502 mm; 15 by 19¾ in.

With Walker's Galleries Ltd., London;
Princess Henrietta Pignatelli, Newport, R.I, and Washington, D.C.

This landscape appears to belong to a small group of pastoral subjects by Pillement executed in shades of blue pastel applied directly onto prepared canvases. Two fractionally smaller examples, depicting a Landscape with figures by the ruins of a Roman aqueduct and a River Landscape with figures fishing, were previously on the London art market.1
