Romeyn de Hooghe
An exotic landscape, with two figures in conversation under a tree, an armadillo nearby
Pen and brown ink and wash over traces of black chalk;
signed in brown ink, lower left: R. de Hooghe
390 by 264 mm; 15⅜ by 10⅜ in.
Romeyn de Hooghe was one of the most prolific, imaginative and influential of all Dutch printmakers and illustrators of the later 17th and early 18th centuries. He also worked as a draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medallist. Of the more than 3500 prints that he made during the course of his career, perhaps the most celebrated were his caricatures of the French King Louis XIV, and his propagandist prints in support of William of Orange. He also illustrated topographical, literary, mythological, emblematic and even erotic publications.
This drawing of an exotic scene may perhaps have been made as an unused study for de Hooghe's series of engravings, Les Indes Orientales et Occidentales, et autres lieux ; représentés en très-belles figures...., 1680.1
