In 1910 Majorelle travelled to Egypt, settling for a year in Cairo in search of scenes of local everyday life, which he found in the villages of Marg and Materieh, away from the hustle and bustle of an increasingly touristy Cairo. Two more trips followed, in 1911–12, and 1913–14. A Man of Cairo dates to this last trip.
