The present work is a bozzetto for the large signed canvas John the Baptist preaching in the Wilderness (267 x 183.5 cm.) by Manetti for the Church of San Giovannino della Staffa, Siena, which can be dated to circa 1609. Manetti completed for the church four canvases depicting scenes from the life of Saint John, forming the most important part of the decorative cycle, which included works by Domenico Manetti, Raffaello Vanni, Astolfo Petrazzi, Bernardino Mei, Giovan Battista Giustammiani, Dionisio Montorselli and also probably Angelo di Niccolò Tegliacci, Cristoforo Rustici, Niccolò Nasini and Niccolò Tornioli.
