Born in Löwenberg, in the Prussian Province of Silesia, Johannes Pfuhl studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts under Hermann Schievelbein. He subsequently collaborated with his master on the bronze memorial formerly at the Dönhoffplatz, Berlin. Following Schievelbein's death, Pfuhl settled in Charlottenburg. Although he specialised primarily in monumental works, Pfuhl was also active as a portrait sculptor.
The mathematician, lecturer, and film maker Professor Dr. Roland K. Fuchshuber (1932-2024) was also a devoted and renowned Mozart scholar. In 1992 he curated the exhibition Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön - 229 Jahre Mozartportraits in Cologne, and he later wrote two books on this subject.
