Description

Acrylic on Official NBA Backboard

2011

Hype was created by artist Skewville. The work consists of acrylic on an official NBA backboard.

Skewville, started by twin brothers Adam and Droo in Queens, transitioned from a makeshift creative hub into a recognized name in the street art world. Initially known for their handcrafted bongs, the brothers shifted to street art after a government crackdown post-9/11. In 1999, they launched their iconic "Sneaker Mission," tossing hand-cut wooden sneakers over power lines as a fresh take on street art, standing out from traditional posters and stickers. Their work blends retro aesthetics with urban culture, often using satire and bold visuals. Skewville's art evolved as they opened the Orchard Street Art Gallery in 2002, becoming a platform for independent and experimental art. Their unique style and DIY approach continue to shape their projects, including a fully customized art compound in Bushwick, where they merge street art with immersive installations and interactive experiences.
