里昂,白萊果畫廊〈喬治・馬修油畫展〉一九八九年至一九九〇年

A man with a deep artistic feeling and with a high theoretical thought, Mathieu is an artist who, with his art, not only was able to conquer in the decades following the Second World War the interest of major international collectors and museums - from Peggy Guggenhiem Collection in Venice to the MoMA in New York, from the Art Institute of Chicago to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His influence continues to resonate today, as evidenced by the important retrospective that is currently hosted at the K11 Musea in Hong Kong.

From the pioneering experiments in Paris in the 1940s, to the performance art that projected him onto the international scene in the 1950s, up to the 1960s and 1970s, when his works increasingly spread in the mainstream circuits, Mathieu has constantly opened new paths, experimenting persistently over the decades to expand the possibilities of abstraction.

The 1980s marked a "cosmic change", followed by a "barbaric period" starting from 1989 onwards. L’Espace eclate from 1990 fully belongs to this period, in which, in the words of Edouard Lombard, one can find "more violent spurts, multiple flows and explosions, unprecedented choices of color, often highly contrasting, sometimes cavernous backgrounds that can then achieve a three-dimensional quality in the composition."

In the present work, the salient features of lyrical abstraction clearly emerge. Observing the painting, in fact, it is possible to perceive the speed of its realization, which appears as a “pictorial flight” that escapes the chains of consciousness.
