A self-taught artist and one of the earliest members of the ‘Northwest School,’ Graves had a preternatural ability to create drawings and paintings with delicate and meticulous forms. Executed in 1950, Time of Change is a powerful manifestation of the artist's belief in the spiritual bond between himself and the lands of the Pacific Northwest. Under his lifelong study of Zen Buddhism, Graves built his artistic methods around nature and the tremendous possibility of lines and form to bridge a specific spiritual understanding. Graves’ works reside in prominent institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American art, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, among others.
