Thence by descent
An English graduate from Colgate University, Mayer began his career practicing law in New York. In 1944, he moved into the emerging television industry, later establishing his own stations in Cleveland, Ohio and Kansas City. His passion for art led to his founding of World House Galleries in the Carlyle Hotel in New York in 1957. The gallery exhibited a wealth of works by international modern artists, including Mohan Samant. Mayer and his daughter visited Samant’s New York loft on a number of occasions, watching the artist paint and attending sitar concerts where he performed with his wife Jillian and Ravi Shankar. Mayer acquired the current lots directly from the artist, along with an array of other artworks through his dealings at World House Galleries. Mayer has donated thousands of works to his alma mater at Colgate University.
