Corrida combines vivid colors, dynamic gestures, and an aggressive sense of rhythm to capture the raw, instinctual energy of the famous bullfight. Lucio Fontana seamlessly blends his spatial explorations with the visceral drama of the arena, including the public, the toreador and of course the raging bull. In Liguria's Albissola on the Northern coast of Italy, Fontana worked with terracotta, marking the surface with his iconic holes (buchi) and slashes (tagli), creating a spatial tension that mirrored the intense, life-and-death energy of the Spanish 'corrida', just as his forbear Picasso, who had long been captivated by bullfighting and often depicted bulls in his ceramics and paintings, reflecting a shared fascination with this powerful motif.
