Jan Pynas, a central member of the group of artists often referred to as the 'pre-Rembrandtists', travelled to Italy in 1605, in the company of Pieter Lastman (1583-1633), and again in 1617. These trips were to have a fundamental effect on his artistic development, particularly the first one, when he came into close contact with the groundbreaking German artist Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610).
The broad, sketchy style of the present drawing is, however, closer to Pynas's later works, such as Jacob Seeking the Household Gods from Rachel, in the Rijksmuseum, which is signed and dated Jan Pynas ft. / Romae 1617 (thus providing us with the date of the second Roman trip).1
The approach to biblical storytelling espoused by Pynas, Lastman and the other Dutch artists who visited Rome in the first years of the 17th century was to have a profound influence on Lastman's future pupil, Rembrandt, and his contemporaries, who did not themselves visit Italy.
