Description
Follower of Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Landscape with a herder and cattle by a large tree, a distant view to the left
Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk, within black ink framing lines
201 by 310 mm; 7 ⅞ by 12 ¼ in.
Very much inspired by drawings by Pieter Breugel the Elder, such as the Landscape with Saint Jerome and the Cow Pasture before a Farmhouse, both in Washington1, this energetically drawn landscape can be associated with a group of drawings that have sometimes been given to Jan Brueghel the Elder, and more recently to Paul Bril.2 As is evident, though, from details such as the physiognomy of the animals, this drawing must actually be by another, still unidentified artist in the orbit of Bruegel.
