Description
Théodore Géricault
Rouen 1791 - 1824 Paris
A carriage horse, seen from behind
Black chalk and black lead
244 by 296 mm; 9 ⅝ by 11 ⅝ in.
Though this fine and highly characteristic example of Géricault's draughtsmanship remains unpublished, it has previously been dated by Professor Lorenz Eitner to circa 1818-20.1 Eitner compares the present work to a sheet in the Art Institute of Chicago in which the horse is similarly shown, sharply turning its neck.2 A further sheet, also in Chicago, provides a strong stylistic comparison to our drawing, with the hatching and general delineation of form highly comparable.3
