tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

diameter: 9 ¼ in.; 23.5 cm.


depicting Alexander the Great commanding that the works of Homer be placed in the tomb of Achilles. The reverse inscribed Alisandro Magnio and with various collection labels, one explaining the subject matter and others denoting inventory numbers and the number ‘102’ scratched into the glaze, indicating that this was a 19th century addition to the Fountaine collection.
