Cupid with a lion
signed: PITTALUGA
white marble, on a white marble base
71cm., 28in. overall
The present sculpture depicts Cupid with a lion, which is an allegorical representation of Strength tamed by Love. The composition of the present marble, with Cupid walking alongside the lion, recalls Bertel Thorvaldsen's (1770-1844) relief of Cupid's Power over the Elements in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The marble is carved with a delicate nature and lustrous surface, which is emblematic of Carlo Pittaluga's work.
Little biographical information is known about Pittaluga; he was active in fin-de-siècle Italy and his works relate to the Art Nouveau style. The present marble testifies to his expertise in carving sculpture with precision and sensitivity.
