Hailing from the town of Caullery near Cambrai, Louis de Caullery trained under Joos de Momper in Antwerp and remained active in Flanders throughout his life. Early in his career, De Caullery likely traveled to the Italian peninsula, where he painted views of Venice, Florence, and Rome ande absorbed the cities’ artistic heritage. Combining perspectival accuracy with architectural precision, this composition offers a stage-like view of the Piazzetta, where elegantly-dressed figures partake in the cultural theater of Venice.
