The founder of one of the most important French artistic dynasties, Jacob van Loo executed this signed and dated portrait in 1656, four years before fleeing Amsterdam for Paris in order to avoid the death sentence he received for a fatal stabbing. The richly attired sitter projects a nonchalant confidence: engaging directly with the viewer, he slightly extends his left hand toward the picture plane. His wide lace cuffs were fashionable among elite members of Amsterdam society and underscore the sitter's wealth and social prestige.
