each framed: 12 ¼ by 10 ¼ in.; 31.1 by 26.0 cm.

Madame Camille Lelong (née Laurentine-Françoise Bernage; 1840-1902);

Her posthumous sale, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 11 May 1903, lot 535 (as Michele Marieschi);

Thereafter acquired by the present owner.

This charming pair of capricci were once owned by Madame Lelong, a distinguished Parisian collector and dealer who lived at the Hôtel Rouillé de Meslay on the Ile Saint-Louis. When reporting on the sale that included the present works, the Burlington Gazette noted the "exceptional character" of her collection.1
