Vanitas Still Life

inscribed lower center on stone ledge: ET SICVT IN ADAM OMNES MORIVNTVR / ITA ET IN CHRISTO OMNES VIVIFICABVNTVR / C[OR] ...

oil on canvas

canvas: 31 ½ by 21 ¾ in.; 80.0 by 55.3 cm.

framed: 36 by 25 ¾ in.; 91.4 by 65.4 cm.

This intriguing vanitas still life can be associated with a group of three related paintings, each with slight compositional variations, previously attributed to the German artist Peter Binoit.1 Inscribed in latin along the lower edge of the composition, a biblical verse (1 Corinthians 15:22) echoes the sentiment of the vanitas iconography: "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."
