An enigmatic figure who worked in Leiden in the second quarter of the seventeenth century, the Monogrammist IS was heavily influenced by the work of the young Rembrandt. The present painting, indeed, depicts a model traditionally described as Rembrandt's mother. Although that identification is today questions, the subject reappears in paintings by Rembrandt and members of his circle, notably Gerrit Dou and Jan Lievens.
