David Gould, a distinguished artist born in London in 1947, has captivated audiences with his innovative approach to mix traditional and digital art forms. His artistic journey, which began with formal studies at the Gloucestershire and Royal Colleges of Art, has evolved into a practice that seamlessly integrates painting, digital media, and shallow relief casting.

Gould's proposed artwork for the Sotheby's auction, "Skirmish" from the Bathers series, exemplifies his unique ability to capture the essence of human interaction and the joy of being in water. This digital print in bas relief on board, measuring 81.5 by 53.5 cm unframed and 97.5 by 70 by 3 cm framed, is a physical piece that invites viewers to immerse themselves in its dynamic composition.

The Bathers series, showcased on platforms such as the Hay Hill Gallery and Gould's own website, highlights the artist's fascination with the playful and unselfconscious delight of swimmers and bathers. These works, both physical and virtual, celebrate the minute, often surprising moments of everyday life. Gould's innovative technique of combining handcrafted methods with digital video images allows him to link successive momentary images, revealing minute sequential fragments of time and activity within a pictorial space.

In "Skirmish," Gould employs shallow bas relief to animate the typically mechanical character of the digital print, adding a hint of three-dimensionality and enhancing the qualities of color, texture, and surface. The relief surface gently breaks through the picture plane, creating an impression of figures swimming within the work's surface. This interplay of depth and motion invites viewers to experience the artwork as though they are part of the scene, immersed in the incessant motion of the sea. His work represent his ability to blend traditional and contemporary techniques, creating pieces that are both visually captivating and emotionally resonant with a celebration of life's fleeting moments.
