Simon de la Rouviere is an innovative artist at the forefront of on-chain generative art, blending technology with creative expression. His latest piece, See You There (2024), will be featured in Sotheby’s auction organized by the Lumen Prize. This unique 1-of-1 artwork is a long-form, participatory on-chain project that evolves over five years, reflecting the ownership journey of the piece.
See You There utilizes the power of NFTs to explore the concept of provenance in art. The artwork comprises a spiral design that changes incrementally based on how long it is held by its owner. Each section of the spiral represents a two-week period, with different colors added randomly from a palette of three. If transferred too soon, no new section will be added, encouraging the collector to engage with the artwork over time. After five years, the spiral completes and no further ownership data is recorded, creating a visual representation of the artwork’s journey.
De la Rouviere's work is a statement to the enduring nature of NFTs and also an experiment in how blockchain can be used to store and highlight the history and provenance of digital art. As part of a broader exploration into this medium, See You There is paired with another upcoming project, We Were Here, both of which delve into the relationship between digital art and its historical significance. A striking fusion of art and technology, See You There is a jem of creativity in the digital age.
