Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Snow Scene at the Shrine of Benzaiten in the Pond at Inokashira (Inokashira no ike Benzaiten no yashiro yuki no kei)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Snow, Moon, and Flowers at Famous Places (Meisho setsugekka), signed Hiroshige ga (Pictured by Hiroshige), censor's seal Tanaka (Tanaka Heishiro), published by Maruya Jinpachi (Enjudo) in 1843

Horizontal oban: 24.8 x 36.6 cm., 9¾ x 14⅜ in.

This design exists in three editions: the first issued by an unidentified publisher with diamond-shaped seal containing the character 'Zen' impressed on the lower centre. Another edition issued by Maruya Jinpachi with a circular seal placed on the right within the border. This impression is of the third edition also issued by Maruya Jinpachi; a new block was carved for the falling snow, giving the overall effect of heavier snowfall than the previous editions.
