woodblock print, signed Hasui, sealed Kawase, titled in the lower left margin as above, publisher's mark (Hotei 'B', circa 1924-30) to lower right margin Hanken shoyu Watanabe Shozaburo [copyright reserved, Watanabe Shozaburo), dated Showa sannen saku (made in 1928)

Vertical obaiban (double oban): 51.3 x 37.2 cm., 20¼ x 14⅝ in.

The vermillion lacquered facade of the Inokashira Benzaiten shrine is depicted brilliantly against its snow-covered surroundings. The great ukiyo-e landscape artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) depicted a similar view of the shrine blanketed in snow eighty-five years earlier (see Lot 30).
