尼泊爾 十三 / 十四世紀 銅鎏金蓮花手觀音立像

Height 8¼ in., 21 cm

Himalayan Art Resources item no. 15050.

Florida Private Collection, acquired in the 1980s (by repute).

This fine gilt-bronze figure of Padmapani Lokeshvara, the lotus-bearing form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, exemplifies the Early-Malla-style of sculpture that emerged from the Kathmandu Valley and proliferated throughout Asia. The helmut-like crown behind the figure’s five-petaled diadem with ribbons, punctuated by inlaid glass or garnet, resembles the tiered style of crowns worn by Vajracharya priests of the Newar Buddhist society indigenous to the Kathmandu Valley. The supple limbs and fluid tribhanga posture are exemplary demonstrations. The present bronze is closely related to one of nearly identical size sold at Bonhams New York, 16th March 2021, lot 309.
