Patek Philippe began production of the minute repeater with split-second chronograph in 1870, offering models with and without a register. The model soon became a specialty within the maker's expanding collection. Interestingly, the booming economy of the United States drove significant demand for these timepieces, with approximately 50% of production going to the United States. Tiffany & Co., Bailey Banks and Biddle, Shreve, and Spaulding were among the prominent retailers of these prestigious watches. Although an estimated 900 minute repeating split-second chronographs were produced, only around 160 pieces have resurfaced in the market.
