The Rolex Submariner is, without doubt, one of the most recognisable watches on the planet. The rotating diving bezel, ‘Mercedes’ style hour hand and triangle at 12 all combine to make this watch instantly recognisable, and is no less relevant today than when this example was made in 1981, or indeed when the model was first introduced in the mid twentieth century. 

The present lot, a reference 16808, retains many features from the iconic reference 1680 such as vintage sized case and aluminium bezel, while introducing necessary updates to improve the usability such as a quick-set date window. What elevates this watch further in terms of collectability is the colour of the nipple dial, which over time has aged to take on a lovely tropical or chocolate patina. As each tropical dial ages differently, each watch dial that has discoloured over time turns into a one of a kind treasure.
