Patek Philippe's "tonneau" watches, characterized by their distinctive barrel-shaped cases, have a fascinating history that reflects the brand's commitment to innovation and elegance. The term "tonneau" means "barrel" in French, and these watches gained popularity in the early 20th century, particularly during the Art Deco period, when geometric shapes and unique designs were in vogue.
Patek Philippe introduced its first tonneau-shaped watch in the 1920s, showcasing the brand's craftsmanship and ability to blend traditional watchmaking with modern aesthetics.
The present watch has a movement manufactured around 1930 but was not cased until ca 1955. From this period we see that movements were sometimes manufactured and stored before being cased in a later model.
