Urban Jurgensen is a brand known for their refined and classic designs. Though the maison has existed since the 19th century, the brand as we know it today is the result of several changes in ownership, with each period marked by key design characteristics. The Urban Jurgensen of today was acquired and helmed by the watchmaking duo of Peter Baumberger and Derek Pratt in 1982. The two went onto redefine Urban Jurgensen’s ethos and introduced distinctive and recognisable design cues such as the teardrop lugs and their own interpretation of Breguet hands. This was applied across all of their early watches including the exceptional references 1, 2 and 3.
After the passing of both Pratt and Baumberger, ownership of the brand changed hands again, this time to an investors group led by another famed watchmaker: the famous Kari Voutilainen. Under his tenure, Urban Jurgensen combined their already established characteristics such as the teardrop lugs and hands with signature Voutilainen guilloche techniques.
The present watch is a product of this new era. Number 1 of a highly limited series of only 20 pieces, this Urban Jurgensen belongs to the classic design language of mid century Calatrava-style dress watches, and features the complete set of characteristics from both eras of the brand. The dial of each watch was beautifully engraved by hand, as can be expected from a Voutilainen creation, but on the flip side the full prowess of the brand can be seen in the proprietary Calibre P4, also hand finished and featuring an oversized balance wheel held in place by an openworked transversal bridge.
Presented in very good condition, this highly limited and sought after Urban Jurgensen can truly be said to be beautiful inside and out.
