References 6263 and 6265 began production in the early 1970s. The bezel type differentiated the two from one another, with reference 6263, like the present lot, featuring an acrylic bezel and reference 6265, fitted with a metal bezel. The 6263 and 6265 models are further distinguished from their preceding references by the introduction of larger, screw-down chronograph pushers and winding crown and the addition of 'Oyster' signed to the dial. The introduction of these attributes marked the standard for all future references and are still utilized on Daytona models to this day.
The present watch can be differentiated from other references 6263, because it has a movement number engraved under the balance wheel. At the time, only the gold versions of the Daytona has a movement number, but due to the lack of success of the watch, Rolex started equipping these calibre on steel models as well. This small difference makes this watch even more collectable.
