Made in a limited edition of just 150 pieces, this highly unusual watch demonstrates the creativity and artistic prowess that makes Cartier one of the most desirable watchmakers today. Two elements, both core to Cartier’s history and design DNA, are at work in this watch: mystery, and exotic materials. Connoisseurs will know the significance of these elements, and their use in historic Cartier 'Mystery Clocks' from over a century ago.
At first glance, the time is difficult, if not almost impossible to discern from looking at the dial of this watch, as it is obscured by an opulent diamond set dragon with an emerald set eye. However, this mysterious veil can be lifted using the pusher at 4 o’clock, opening the skeletonised outer case to reveal an inner dial. Made from purple mother-of-pearl and further embellished with a white mother-of-pearl dragon and finished with diamond and emerald setting, the time can be more easily read from the high polished hands atop.
The present lot is a rare and truly remarkable display of artisanal mastery coupled with design brilliance from Cartier. This is an unmissable opportunity for collectors to own a watch that is imbued with the history of the brand, yet presents in an altogether modern and elegant way.
